Entrevista con Valeria Favoccia: «Me encanta trabajar en franquicias como ‘Stranger Things’ y añadirles mi creatividad»

Valeria Favoccia. Anotad ese nombre, subrayadlo en rojo. Tras descubrirla en Stranger Things. Chicos zombis (aquí, su reseña), una espléndida presentación para una artista que apunta alto, queríamos saber más de ella. Aunque en España solo hemos visto ese trabajo publicado, ha hecho muchos cómics de franquicia y nos habla en esta entrevista de sus gustos, de sus influencias, de su pasión por Assassin’s Creed y la Fórmula 1. Aseguraos de apuntar el nombre, os aseguramos que no os vais a arrepentir.

Stranger Things, Power Rangers, Doctor Who, Assassin’s Creed… Da la sensación de que los editores confían en ti para desarrollar franquicias. ¿Te gusta esta clase de trabajo o estás deseando hacer algo diferente?

¡Hola y gracias por recibirme! Sí, me encanta trabajar en franquicias, mucho de hecho. Sobre todo porque soy fan de muchas de ellas, así que es más fácil para mí ponerme en situación en un mundo que ya existe y que conozco bien. Además, me gusta tener la capacidad de añadirles mi gusto y mi creatividad. ¡Es como estar en casa! De todos modos, me gustaría algún día hacer mi serie de creación propia, puede que con la historia y el escritor adecuado. ¡Creo que tiene que ser muy divertido crear un mundo entero desde cero!

Vamos a centrarnos en Stranger Things. Es tu primer trabajo publicado en España. Me encanta tu trabajo, ha sido una gran sorpresa, pero si tuvieras la oportunidad de presentarte a los lectores, ¿qué les dirías? ¿Cómo definirías tu estilo, qué autores son tus referentes, qué tipos de cómic te gustan como aficionada y como profesional…?

¡Estoy encantada de que mi libro haya salido en España y muy feliz de que te guste mi estilo! Te lo agradezco mucho. ¿Qué puedo decir sobre mí? Mi estilo es un hibrido de cosas diferentes que me encantan: estilo de cómic europeo, estilo de manga, estilo de cómics americanos, algo de mis videojuegos favoritos, evolucionar constamente y me pongo retos continuamente para mejorar cada vez más. Sobre todo adoro dibujar secuencias de acción, cosas futuristas, elementos de terror, adolescentes, secuencias emocionales, ¡o todo a la vez, ja, ja! Tengo tantos artistas que me inspiran que busco referencias todos los días, entre ellos puedo citar desde luego a Jorge Jiménez, Pepe Larraz, Olivier Coipel, Dan Mora, pero hay tantos más que sería imposible hacer una lista. Además, no solo incluiría artistas de cómic, ¡también fotógrafos, directores, artistas conceptuales y muchos más…! Lo mismo puedo decir con cómics y manga que adoro, resumiendo puedo decir que soy una gran aficionada de Iron Man y que de verdad me encanta la serie de Blame! Adoro los videojuegos, son una inspiración constante para mí. Entre mis favoritos están Bioshock Infinite, la saga de Assassin’s Creed, la saga de Devil May Cry y Death Strandings.

Como artista italiana, ¿has tenido feedback sobre la serie en tu propio país? ¿Crees que esta historia puede darte una mayor proyección internacional… y por supuesto nuevos encargos?

¡Por desgracia, mis libros de Stranger Things no se han puesto a la venta todavía en Italia! Pero tanto mis colegas como mis amigosme han dado mucho apoyo y se han emocionado mucho al escuchar noticias sobre ello. Desde luego, espero que trabajar en una serie tan conocida y querida ayude a que la gente me conozca mejor y que llegue tan lejos como sea posible.

¿Te fue muy difícil captar la esencia de los personajes, teniendo en cuenta que todo el mundo tiene su imagen en mente gracias a la serie de televisión?

La verdad es que no fue muy difícil. Estaba un poco nerviosa al principio, ya que Stranger Things es una serie de televisión muy conocida y todo el mundo la aprecia, y también a sus personajes, pero intenté dejar esos pensamientos a un lado y mantener centrada en cómo quería que luciera el libro. Es un libro para adolescentes, así que básicamente pensé que un estilo completamente fotorrealista no funciona para muchos jóvenes lectores, y además tampoco encaja en mi estilo. Intenté hacer a los personajes a mi estilo para ser capaz de moverlos a mi gusto y para tener la suficiente libertad artística. ¡Espero que a los aficionados les haya gustado el resultado!

Will es el protagonista principal de Chicos zombis. ¿Es tu favorito? ¿Cómo diste con la forma de dibujar como si fueras él?

¡Ja, ja, eso fue lo más difícil del libro! Le eché un vistazo a sus dibujos en la serie y traté de pensar como un niño de doce años mientras trataba de recrear su estilo. ¡Espero que se parezca a sus dibujos! En cuando a Will, me gusta dibujarle porque siempre está luchando en esa guerra interna, siempre es muy enocional con sus expresiones y su lenguaje corporal. Pero de hecho mi personaje favorito en la serie es su hermano, Jonathan, ¡al que no he tenido la oportunidad de dibujar todavía!, mientras que mi favorito de entre los chicos principales es Mike.

Vuestro nuevo personaje, Joey, se parece un montón a Steven Spielberg, e incluso lleva una camiseta homenajeando a Tiburón. ¿Fue idea tuya o recibiste instrucciones precisas de Greg Pak?

Fue muy divertido dibujar a Joey y darle vida. Es un chico inteligente, muy creativo, pero mola mucho y actúa también así. Greg me dio la idea de que fuera un pequeño fanático de Spielberg que pudiera llevar camisetas frikis, ¡así que me lo pasé bien escogiendo los diseños! Me gusta mucho, es como un hijo para mí, ja, ja.

¿Y cómo es trabajar con Greg? ¿Sus guiones son detallados o tuviste libertad para hacer las cosas a tu manera?

Gres es sencillamente asombroso. Estaba tan emocionada de trabajar con él que lo hizo lo mejor que pude para que su legendario nombre pudiera aparecer junto al mío. En los guiones, todas sus instrucciones son claras y lo suficientemente básicas para darte una idea y una dirección perfectas, pero también te deja espacio para que te vuelvas loca y puedas expresarte. Y además, siempre que he necesitado ayuda se ha mostrado dispuesto a echar una mano. ¡La verdad es que he disfrutado mucho trabajando con él! Y si me permites añadirlo, también adoro trabajar con mis editores, Spencer Cushing y Konner Knudsen, siempre han sido pacientes y me han respaldado, ¡son sin duda el mejor equipo!

Chicos zombi y esta línea de cómics de Stranger Things se publicó después de la que ha escrito Jody Houser, con dibujo de otro italiano, Stefano Martino, y Edgar Salazar. ¿Los has leído? ¿Fue su dibujo una inspiración para ti o simplemente has seguido tu propio camino?

Sí, lo hice cuando llegaron a Italia, pero no los miré para hacer mi serie porque tenían un público objetivo distinto y teníamos estilos artísticos bastante diferentes. Yo solo quería estar centrada en mi propia historia y en mi estilo para crear mi propio libro sin sentir demasiada presión.

Ya has hecho un segundo arco de Stranger Things, The Bully. Estoy seguro que en España lo veremos muy pronto. ¿Qué podemos esperar de él? ¿Qué ha sido para ti lo mejor de hacerlo?

¡Yo también espero que salga pronto en España! Es una historia sobre Troy y James que tiene lugar a lo largo de la segunda temporada. Os damos la oportunidad de conocer algo de la historia de Troy, de su familia y de su comportamiento. Creo que es más profunda que Chicos Zombis, ¡y espero que la disfrutéis tanto como lo he hecho yo mientras la dibujaba! En esta historia me ha encantado dibujar a los demoperros, me encanta dibujar monstruios en general, así que me hizo mucha ilusión dibujar algunas de las cosas extrañas de Stranger Things.

Ha sido toda una sorpresa averiguar que además eres cosplayer… Háblame de eso… ¿Solo ha sido con Assassin’s Creed o te gustaría hacer cosplay de otros personajes? ¿Cuál es el que más te encantaría hacer en el futuro?

Me encanta hacer todo tipo de cosas creativas. Una de mis favoritas es coser y crear complementos, crear algo con tus propias manos y hacer un buen trabajo es algo muy satisfactorio. ÚLtimamente estoy algo fuera del cosplay, porque no tengo mucho tiempo para seguir haciéndolo, pero me ha permitido conocer a algunos mis amigos más cercanos a lo largo de los años. Sobre todo mi ocupo de mi asociación sin ánimo de lucro. que se llama Assassin’s Creed Cosplay Italia (aquí, enlace a su página de Facebook), el mayor grupo italiano de cosplayers de Assassin’s Creed, también hacemos eventos basados en la saga por todo el país. Cumplí uno de mis sueños como cosplayers con el de Crowley, de Good Omens, soy una gran fan del libro y ya había hecho un traje de carnaval allá por el año 2007 que me encantó rehacer con mis habilidades actuales y con su nuevo diseño oficial. Pero si tuviera el tiempo y la oportunidad, me gustaría hacer el de Higgs Monaghan, de Death Stranding, adoro los diseños de asesino de Yoji Shinkawa y Higgs es el más increíble del juego.

También he visto que eres fan de la Fórmula 1. Aquí en España, hace algunos años, Belén Ortega, que ahora trabaja para Marvel, hizo una biografía en cómic de Marc Márquez, campeón del mundo de Moto GP. ¿Conoces el libro? ¿Crees que este podría ser un camino que podrías explorar tú con grandes campeones de la Fórmula 1?

Los conozco a los dos, a Ortega y Márquez, ¡y los dos me encantan, son tremendos! Pero no conocía el libro, ya que no se ha pubicado todavía en Italia, ¡así que muchas gracias!, desde luego voy a buscarlo, ¡suena fenomenal! No veía Moto GP hasta este año, cuando Pao, un gran amigo mío, me animó a hacerlo, y ahora mi piloto favorito es Franco Morbidelli, por el que siempre un profundo respeto y al que apoyo sin reservas. También, sí, soy fan de la F1 y de Ferrera desde que era pequeña. Solía ver las carreras de F1 con mi padre y mi hermana y siempre las disfruté, es uno de mis recuerdos más felices y algo que guardo muy dentro de mí. ¡Para mí lo sería todo tener la oportunidad de dibujar un cómic de uno de mis pilotos favoritos! Podría ser uno de mis favoritos de siempre, como Michael Schumacher o Kimi Raikkonen, o alguno de los jóvenes, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen o también el próximo piloto de Ferrari, Carlos Sainz, al que animo mucho, estoy muy feliz de que se una a mi equipo favorito ¡y estoy deseando verleen la temporada 2021, ja, ja! Lo daría todo por una oportunidad como esa, sin ninguna duda.

Zombie Boys (here‘s the review), a splendid presentation for an artist who aims high, we wanted to know more about her. Although we have only seen that published work in Spain, he has done many franchise comics and he tells us in this interview about his tastes, his influences, his passion for Assassin’s Creed and Formula 1.Make sure to write down the name, we assure you that you will not regret it.

Stranger Things, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Doctor Who, Assassin’s Creed…It seems editors trust you to develop franchises. Do you like that kind of job or are you willing to do something different?

Hi and thanks for having me! Yes, I do love working on franchises, very much actually. Mostly because I’m a fan of a lot of them so it’s easier for me to set my mind on a world that already exists and that I know well. Also I love being able to add some of my tastes and creativity into it. Feels like home! However, I’d like to do a creator owned comics series someday, maybe with the right story and the right writer. I think it would indeed be fun to create a whole world completely from scratch!

Let’s focus on Stranger Things: Zonbie Boys. This is your very first artwork published in Spain. I really love your artwork, it was quite a surprise, but if you have the opportunity to introduce yoursefl to the readers, what would you say? How do you define your style, who are your references, what kind of comic do you like as a fan and as a proffesional…?

I’m so glad that my book is out in Spain and very happy that you like my style! I really appreciate it. What can I say about me? My style is an hybrid of different things that I love: european comics style, manga style, american comics style, some of my favourite videogames, it costantly evolve and I costantly challenge myself to improve it every time. Mostly I love drawing action sequences, futuristic stuffs, horror things, teens, emotional sequences or all of them together ha, ha! I have so much artists that inspire me and that I look for references everyday, among them I can say for sure Jorge Jiménez, Pepe Larraz, Olivier Coipel, Dan Mora, but there are so so many more that it would be impossible to made a list. Also it would not just include comic artists, but also photographers, directors, concept artists and so on…! Same goes with comics or mangas that I love, to sum them up I can say that I am a huge fan of Iron Man and I really love the Blame! series. I also love very much videogames, they are a constant inspiration for me. Among my favourites are: Bioshock Infinite, Assassin’s Creed saga, Devil May Cry saga and Death Stranding.

As an italian artist, have you any feedback about the book in your own country? Do you think this can give you more international projection… and of course new assignments?

Unfortunately, my Stranger Things books aren’t released yet in Italy! But both my collegues and my friends were truly supportive and excited when they heard the news about it. Sure I hope that working for a well knowed and so loved series will allow people to know me better and to reach out as far as possible.

How hard was for you to capture the esence of the characters from Stranger Things, as everybody has their image in mind from the TV series?

Not so much actually. I was a bit nervous in the beginning since Stranger Things is a well know TV series and everybody loves it and its characters, but I tried to put aside those thoughts and keep focusing on how I wanted this book to look like. It’s a Young Adult, so basically it’s mostly for younger readers I thought that a full photorealistic style didn’t work and also it doesn’t suit my style. I tried to make the characters in my style to be able to move them as I pleased and to have enough artistic freedom. I hope that the fans will like the result!

Will is the main character in Zombie Boys. It’s your favorite one? How did you find the way to draw as if you were him?

Ha, ha, it was the most difficult part of the book! I had a look at his drawing from the series and I tried to think like a 12 years old boy while trying to recreate his style. I hope that they look quite similar to his sketches! As for Will, I like drawing him because he’s always struggling with his personal interior war, he’s also always so emotional with his expressions and body language. But actually my favourite character of the series is his brother, Jonathan, wich I didn’t had the chance to draw, yet!, while my favourite kid from the main ones is Mike.

Your new character, Joey, looks a lot like Steven Spielberg and even has a shirt homaging Jaws. Was that your idea or you had precise instructions from Greg Pak?

Joey was really fun to draw and also to bring to life. He’s a smart kid, very creative, but he’s also very cool and acts like that too. Greg gave me the idea of a little Spielberg fanatic that could wear some nerdy shirts, so I had fun picking his designs! I really like him, he just like a son to me, ha, ha.

And how’s working with Greg? Are his scripts detailed or did you have some freedom to do things your own way?

Greg is simply amazing. I was so excited to work with him and I did my best to match his legendary name with mine. On the scripts, all of his instructions are clear and essentials enough to give you the perfect idea and direction, but also he leaves you the space to go wild and express yourself. And also, whenever I need help, he’s always willing to give me a hand. I really enjoy working with him! And if I may add, I also love to work with my editors, Spencer Cushing and Konner Knudsen, they are always patient, kind and they always have my back, they are the best team for sure!

Zombie Boys and this line of Stranger Things’ comics has been published after the one written by Jody Houser, with art by another italian, Stefano Martino and Edgar Salazar. Have you read those? Was their art an inspiration for you or you just followed you own way?

Yes, I did when they came out in Italy, but I didn’t look at them for my series, since it was a different target and also we have pretty different art style. I just wanted to stay focused on my own story and style to create my own book without feeling much pressure.

You’ve already done a second Stranger Things arc, The Bully. I’m quite sure we’ll see that in Spain soon enough. What can we expect from it? What was the best part for you doing it?

I hope it will be out in Spain soon as well! It’s a story about Troy and James and it took place through season 2. You will have the chance to know something about Troy’s history, his family and his behaviors. I think it’s more deep than Zombie Boys and I really hope you will enjoy it as much as I did while drawing it! In this book, I’ve loved drawing the demodogs, I love drawing monsters in general so I was quite happy to be able to draw some of the stranger things of Stranger Things.

It was quite a suprise to find out that you are also a cosplayer… Tell me about that… Just for Assassin’s Creed or you’d like to cosplay other characters? What’s the one you’ll love to do the most in the future?

I love doing all sort of creative things. One of my favourites is sewing costumes and building props, creating something with your own hands and doing a good job it’s something really satisfying. I’m a bit out of cosplay lately, since I don’t have much time to do it anymore, but it brought me to meet some of my dearest friends through the years. I mostly take care of my nonprofit Association, called Assassin’s Creed Cosplay Italia (here‘s the link to its Facebook Page), the biggest italian group of Assassin’s Creed cosplayers and also we do events based on the saga all around the nation. I did one of my dream cosplay when I’ve made Crowley from Good Omens, I am a huge fan of the book and I already did a carnival costume back in 2007 that I was really happy to do it again with my current skills and with their new and official design. But if I had the time and the chance, I would have liked to do Higgs Monaghan from Death Stranding, I love Yoji Shinkawa killer designs and Higgs has the most incredible one of the game.

I’ve also seen that fou are a Formula 1 fan. Here’s in Spain and some years ago, Belén Ortega, who is now working for Marvel, did a biography in comic for Mac Márquez, world champion in Moto GP. Do you know that book? Do you think this could be a way for you to explore with great F1 champions?

I do know both Ortega and Marquez, and I like them both, they’re both terrific!, but I didn’t know about the book as it isn’t released in Italy yet, so thank you so much! I’m definitely going to check it out, it looks amazing! I didn’t watch MotoGP until this year, when Pao, a dear friend of mine, introduced it to me and now my favourite rider is Franco Morbidelli, for whom I have massive respect and I’m fully supporting him. Also yes, I’m a huge F1 and Ferrari fan since I was little. I used to watch F1 races with my dad and my sister and I’ve always enjoyed it, it’s one of my happiest memories and it’s something that’s deep inside of me. For me, it would mean everything to have the chance to draw a comic about one of my favourite drivers! Could it be one of my favourite ever like Michael Schumacher or Kimi Raikkonen or among the young guns: Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen or also the next Ferrari Driver, Carlos Sainz, which I support so much, I’m really happy he’s joining my favourite team and I’m so looking forward to 2021 season, ha, ha! I’d give everything for a chance like that, without any doubt.
